Sunday afternoon fishing

I was planning on being lazy Sunday afternoon with nothing on the plate except hanging out at home, watching a movie or doing some reading until I got a call from Jim, asking me if I wanted to head out to the lake to see if the bluegill and bass were biting.  I was still fried from Saturday’s boating outing, and seeing it was just as hot yesterday, I was looking for excuses to stay home.

No autographs, please

After telling my buddy Ty about my boating/fishing trip to Gosam lake last Monday, he wanted to give it a shot so we made plans to leave at 6 this morning.  Mother nature had other plans, and gave us a lovely thunderstorm along with buckets of rain which by no coincidence, started right at 6, so we had to wait until the weather cleared up.

Batting .500 at Gosam lake

Finally, (after what…7 weeks?) we headed out this morning for some long overdue fishing.

Today we tried a lake we’ve only fished on two other occasions, and both of those times we got skunked bad.  Gosam is a pretty large lake and I’m thinking that unless you know where the good spots are, it’s hit and miss - which is what we ran into today.  I was told not too long ago that one can rent boats with trolling motors at Gosam so rent a boat is what we did.  The price is 35,000 won for a boat that’ll fit 2 people comfortably and it’s yours for the day, or until the battery runs out (I have no idea how long those car batteries last running a trolling motor).

It was a beautiful day to be out on the water except for one minor detail, which was that right after we started, the wind picked up pretty good and was blowing the boat every which way.  The boats, by the way, don’t have anchors, which is something I’ll remedy if I rent another one.  It was super hard trying to stay in one spot and we were constantly having to turn the boat and maneuver back to where we were trying to fish.

As you can see, I was trying both spinnerbaits and my trusty black Senkos (As usual, I only had luck with the Senkos).  I’ll have to get with some people that have fished Gosam before to get some tips but today, we found the bass hiding right next to the cliffs in deep water.  I ended up catching  two around 1/2 pound each, missed two, and my partner had a couple of bites but never did catch one.  I think we spent more time exploring the lake and trying to keep the boat from blowing with the wind than we did fishing, but it was great to get back out, especially on such a gorgeous day like today.

Today is also the last time I fish with Khalil, who’s been my fishing partner for over two years as he’s flying out on the 15th of this month to start a new job in the United Arab Emirates.
