Nomad skips work, goes fishing - again

I’ve got quite a bit of vacation time saved up so I thought I’d go ahead and take a day off to do some fishing - especially since the weather forecast for this weekend is: (drum-roll please) rain.  I left home this morning at 5:10 and got to the river around 5:30 (it’s amazing how fast one can get over there when there’s no traffic).  The day started out beautiful, with no wind, which made the river look like a sheet of glass. (Click on pics to see full-sized images)

Since the water was so calm, I tried some top water lures like poppers and jitterbugs but the bass weren’t interested so I changed to a yellow chatterbait, which I promptly snagged on something and lost (I really should know better by now.)  I wasn’t about to lose another lure, so I switched to plastic worms (4″ black & 5″ green Senkos) and that’s when I started catching fish.  But, just like the last two times I went out, all I caught were small bass.  I had a theory that maybe the bigger bass are still out deep but Rob told me that in the river, the smaller bass are always hiding out near the rocks while the bigger ones follow the bait fish up and down the river and catching them is all a matter of being in the right place at the right time (which the last two times out on the river, I apparently wasn’t).

Out of the eight I caught this morning, the bass in the pic above, on the right, was the biggest of the bunch, I’m sad to say.  I probably lost as many as I caught and broke my line three times right at hook set, which was frustrating but after looking closely at my line, I noticed that near the hook, it was nicked and frayed from dragging it across the rocks.  So from now on, I’ll probably cut a few feet of line off after X number of casts which will hopefully prevent that from happening again.  No trophies today, but it was great to take a day off and relax; I caught fish and what made it even better was that I was the only soul out there this morning.

Except for these guys who kept flying around, probably taking pictures of me so they could report back on what lures where working on the river today :)

congrats on the fishing while playing hookie.
That water looked beautiful. I really thing the netting has to be taking a toll on the bass in the river. I saw many netters there keeping the bass. As stated before, there is a growing market now for bass. I just hope it fizzles out before the bass do.

Thanks, Dave. I’m damned glad that I went this morning because it looks like the rest of the weekend is shot once again due to the weather. WTF is it with the rainy weekends? Blah!

That is a cool boat! How were you able to buy that? Here in Japan, I would have no idea how to purchase anything like that!

    Martin,

Not my boat, unfortunately. That, and the others tied up beside it, belong to local fishermen/netters. I’m strictly a shore fisherman, unless I can find some generous soul to take me out in his boat ;)

Well at least put the camera closer to the fish so they look bigger, like you use too…LMAO
