I went fishing today. I just couldn’t pass up that nice weather and here lately, I’ve been jonesing real bad to go wet a line; today was the perfect opportunity. I got to the river around noon, and when I arrived, I saw that I wasn’t the only one who thought today was a good day for fishing.
There were several people out in their boats and to my surprise, there were also lots of carp fishermen along the shore. I’ve never fished for bass this late in the year and I learned a few things today. First and most important - you have to slow it down. If you think you’re fishing your lure too slow, slow it down even more because the bass are lethargic and aren’t going to expand too much energy chasing down a potential meal. And when the fish do hit a lure, it’s a very light tap and if you’re not paying attention, you may not even know that a bass picked up your worm.
I only fished for a couple of hours and this is the only bass I caught today, although I did manage to miss a couple. To be honest, I was surprised to catch even this one; I didn’t think the bass would be biting this time of year and I went out mainly to get some fresh air and to hold a rod in my hand (no pun intended, you pervs). But now I’m thinking that if we get some more decent weather, I’ll head out again to give it another shot.
I love success stories and good pictures to boot! Truly, a nice day weatherwise. It sounds
like a relaxing day all in all.
the last time i went fishing (in NC 2006)i could feel all the nibbles and pull on my line however the fish are smart and would avoid being hooked and somehow get a lot of my worm!!!
You’re crazy!
LOL
I thought so too, Rob and like I said, I didn’t expect to get a bite, much less catch a fish. Totally different mindset required for winter fishing though, as I found out. When you get back I’ll show you the 2nd area I tried yesterday - I think it’ll be an excellent spot come spring.
Your title said “call me crazy,” so I did. lol
Nomad,
Do you guys know of any power plant cooling lakes near here. Back home, they are the real hotspots this time of year. The colder it gets, the more the baitfish congregate near the discharge and in come the predators, It is not uncommon to find 60 degree water there even when the ambient air temperature is down near single digits..
Good job Nomad. So how many did you catch total? I did not think you would be able to catch anything in Korea from the bank this late in the year. I know with a boat you can catch them in the cold once you find them, but from the bank, that is no easy. You the Man.
hunterdave,
Nope, don’t know of any around here.
Tex Mex,
That was the only one caught, but I did have two other bites, one of which broke my line at hook-set - which is what I get for using the same line that’s been on that rod all year. According to KMA, it’s supposed to get up to 51 degrees Christmas day
I’ve heard that Singal has some sort of warm water runoff area, but you need a boat to reach it.
Ah yes, that’s right but no telling what’s in that water!
