Fishing Jeju for Supper

(By Hunter Dave)

Sorry for the long time between posts. I’ve been very busy lately and decided to reward ourselves with a week in Jeju. While down there, we enjoyed many of the fun island excursions and of course the one that I found to be the most fun was fishing for my supper. We found an operation on the west coast that takes you out for a few hours to let you catch your own dinner. Took the wife and daughter a couple of kilometers offshore and commenced to start slaying them. Quickly we had a couple of nice flounder on board and the captain gets them sushied up real nice. Yum Yum!

We continued to pull in some nice multicolored fish of unknown species and are having a good time. My daughter is slaughtering the 8 to 10 inch mackerel (which deep fried up very nicely by the way) on tiny shrimp catching them 3 at a time, while I start using a larger strip bait and start hooking some sort of larger predators. We had a blast but after a while the waves started to get to my wife (landlover) and so we decided to head back in with a total of about 70 fish. Once were back on shore the operation’s restaurant prepared us up a nice dinner of sushi, spicy fish stew, deep fried mackerel and various other fish dishes. It was outstanding meal topped off by a nice sunset on Jeju’s west coast (sorry I forgot to get a sunset picture). Next time we go down there I am going to try one of the all night offshore fishing trips under the lights. That is supposed to be very fun.

Way to go Dave! Looks like you guys had a real nice time. :)

Just curious, did you guys fly down or take the ferry from Busan? I’ve always wanted to take the ferry but have no idea how to do it.

We were supposed to go to Jeju this time home, but we never got around to it with the rainy season starting.

    Great photos BTW

We flew out of Gimpo Airport on Asiana and rented a car with a GPS. Just entered the phone number of anywhere we wanted to go and the GPS did the rest.
My brother in law took the ferry across last month. Said it was about 5 hour ride, so they rented a room on the ferry that included a bed so they could sleep. He said it really helped out.
Steve, we got extremely lucky with the rain. Only rained the day we arrived and the day we left. Was mostly cloudy though the entire trip.
Yeah I can’t believe I forgot the sunset pic that evening. Was kicking back with the family and enjoying it with a glass of wine and totally forgot it.
    Oh well, next time.

Said it was about 5 hour ride

Ack! I get seasick  so that’s out of the question…

Heh, just messing with you since I take so many sunrise pics ;)

    5 hour boat ride? Ack!

The last time I was in Jeju was back in 1989 and I was at the Army’s rappelling and mountaineering school, rappelling down 300′ cliffs. That was one of the best things the military had going over here, but they shut it down for some reason or another.

    Good morning

Oh! You have been JeJu Island with your family. I go there once per 2 years.

When I go there, I usually go walking fishing. Now I’ve got experience, I become know where the nice point for fishing especially flounder and squid…are. Anyway that place is very beautiful scenery.
Your daughter seems to like having susi. If I had been there, I would have
had nice time with your family. Few days ago, I had been ChungAng marketplace in front of OSAN Airbase. I felt very interesting foreign surroundings. Seemed like I am in the U.S.
When I was there, I guessed you are working in the OSAN Airbase…

    Have nice another new weekdays…..

    Dave,
    That’s look like very good fishing;
    I am planning trip to Jeju in August;
Can you give me the contact for the fishingman/company ?
How did you arrange it ?
I and my family speak no Korean though.

    Joseph from Hong Kong

Joseph, Not speaking any Korean will make it difficult. Their phone number is 064-773-2288. I showed the add to my wife and she called to arrange it. There are many fishing operations throughout the island and surprisingly many people speak some English down there due to the large amounts of tourists coming through.

hii, i wanted to go fishing with a couple of my friends, but i can’t seem to find a place. do you know where exactly you went in jeju?? if so, that’d be great!!

  11. 11 Rob

Monica, Jeju is an island surrounded by water so it shouldn’t be too hard to find a place to fish. ;)
