Lock and Load!

This morning, I tried something completely different; instead of heading out to the river for some early morning bass fishing, I headed to Idong Lake to try my luck.  It was foggy and pitch black dark when I arrived so I couldn’t really pick a good spot since I didn’t want to wade out and hit a deep hole (been there, done that, it’s not fun).

No sunrise pics today since I couldn’t even see the sun from where I was but here’s a duck  - and this pic also gives you a good idea of the type area I was fishing.

I wish I would have brought some top water lures because I think they would have worked pretty good out here but my old standby, the Senko, did the job for me once again.

A bass so nice I had to post it twice smile_teeth  This fish hammered my Senko hard in about two feet of water and immediately took off for deep water, taking out line as it went - one heck of a good fight, I must say.

This is the other decent one I caught this morning - the rest were dinks.  All fish were caught on 5-inch Senkos, black and black with blue flakes.  A good way to start out the week smile_regular

Way to go Nomad, and nice looking fish! And yea, not a bad way to start the week at all.

Thanks Rob! LOL, I’m still stoked from finally catching some decent fish again :)

It doesn’t get any better than that my friend, not on a Monday morning in the ROK. :)

    LOL Rob

That’s a very nice start to the week Nomad…..very nice bass.

Is that grass I see in the water in that duck picture??

Nice fish. My brother lives in Korea and directed me to your blog. Bass really are everywhere, aren’t they?

You seem to fish Senkos alot, and I had a question. A few posts back their is a picture of a senko style worm with a three color laminate orange/blue/green (or is it pumpkin) that I am assuming is a bluegill laminate. I love it, but who makes it?

Also, saw some ICAST coverage of a Korean tackle company, Damiki, that is bringing a large chunk of their product line to the states. What is your opinion of their stuff? They have some 2 piece rods in their Angel EX series that I am really looking hard at.

    Anyways, great site.

    Jeremy,

Steve or John are probably the resident experts on Damiki baits around here. I think Nomad has fished them a few times as well.

I’ve tried their knock-off Senkos a time or two, but without much luck. However, that probably had more to do with my own confidence in the bait than anything else. Even though they’re expensive, I’m a big fan of the original Yamamoto’s, and it’d take something really special to get me to switch off of them.

I didn’t even realize that they (Damiki) were in the pole business, will have to check that out…

    Thanks for dropping by.

    Jeremy,

I have tried the Damiki Senko knockoffs a few times but like Rob, I’m a Yamamoto man, true and blue, mainly because they’ve caught fish for me when nothing else worked and/or when others weren’t catching anything. As for that laminated worm, maybe Steve can chime in what brand that is.

    Steve,

Yes, that is grass you see in that pic. The area I was fishing is pretty thick with it…almost every cast, I was bringing some back with my Senko. But that’s where the fish are hanging out…I tried a frog for about 45 minutes with no takers :(

Yeah, they actually have some really nice rods, from what I saw.

I tend to stick with the original senkos myself. Lately I have been tossing Yum Dingers, which get bit almost as well as the GY senkos, but when the bite is tough and they won’t hit the dingers, they will hit the senkos. I’ve actually started using the swimming senkos as a search bait and follwing up w/ a senko on any missed bites/followers. Its a great combo b/c you can cover a lot of water w/ the swimming senkos. Unlike the original senkos, I actually prefer a small pegged bullet weight on the swimming senkos b/c I think the action is better w/ it (I use the screw in bullet weights).

I was more interested in Damiki for their rods and their jigs and hardbaits, although their spoontail miki looks like a great jig trailer and drop shot bait, and the finesse miki looks like a good drop shot/shakey head trailer. The swing worms look like they would make pretty good wacky jig baits. Actually, looking at their website it looks like they have a pretty cool assortment of soft baits. Can never have too much variety.

    Jeremy S,
I, as Rob already mentioned, was not aware that Damiki made rods. I have quite a few different packs of Damiki plastics and for the most, I’m not a big fan. Their plastic is very tough, good for durability but the action they give off is no where near the same as Yamamoto and other companies. Don’t get me wrong, they do catch fish.

Now for the bluegill laminate stick bait. It is made by a company called “El Grande” and they are a sponsor over at “ultimatebass.com” In fact they are having contest now that if you place an order of more than $50, you could win a fishing trip to Mexico and a second place prize of a swimbait rod (I forgot the brand).

    Nomad,

I’m guessing that the grass grew while the water level was low, and now that the water has come up the bass are living there ??
I fished a lake with that situation last summer and was throwing a frog in the grass and the bass really attacked them. A buzzbait through the grass at sun-down is also a great technique.

Disappointing to hear about the Damiki plastics. Oh well. Thanks for directing me to El Grande, they have some great pours.

BTW, I have to second that buzzbait recommendation. They are also good just before dawn as well. Brand doesn’t seem to matter, just so long as its black. Don’t know why but I have never gotten bit on a buzzbait that wasn’t black.

  13. 13 Steve

My most successfull buzzbait has been a 1/2oz chart/white and it has even caught a lot of fish in the dark with very few short strikes

The El Grande frogs “Rana Toro” are also a great bait which can cast a country mile
