Into the sun

Another beautiful morning out there and without any further ado, here it is:

4Sep08_00014Sep08_00024Sep08_00034Sep08_0004

Before the sun even started rising, I was out there, fishing in the dark.

On my 3rd or 4th cast, I hooked into a really nice fish.  I had my drag set so that a 2-pound fish could take it out, and this one particular fellow was stripping drag like it meant to empty my spool.  I couldn’t even reel the fish in so thinking to myself that I had 30-pound braid on the reel, it would be no problem to tighten the drag down.  Just as I got the drag to where it was almost all the way tight, the line just….gave.  There wasn’t that snap like breaking, but almost a gentle give, like someone had cut the line under water.  I just stood there, in shock.  How could 30-pound braid break like that?  I think the line had gotten nicked or weak from being used among those sharp rocks in the river or, I had tied a crappy palomar knot.  Either way, I lost a nice fish this morning smile_sad.  Of course after that, the only bites I had were ones like the one below:

The carp fishermen were out in force again this morning - check out the number of rods this guy had out there.  Way to hog an entire area all for yourself, eh?

Wow! Nice carp spread. I’m jealous.
That really sucks about the lost fish.
Braid is nice for vertical fishing or for improving reel capacity for the big boys, but has very little abrasion resistance. When we fish the surf back home, we have to put on a long mono topshot on top of the braid (if used) to increase abrasion resistance against the sand bars (ie 80lb mono on 50lb braid).
The palomar is easy to tie but I haven’t ever used it on braid before. Don’t know how well it holds that. I do use it a lot for catfish on 20 to 30 lb mono.
Plus you never know what it was. I’ve hooked into some hellacious carp and catfish when fishing for crappie or white bass.

Yeah, braid and rocky areas don’t mix well. I hate tying a leader onto my braid, but in the rocks its a must. As far as the palomar knot goes, I have had them slip in braid, so I either do a double palomar or a double san diego jam knot. Also, a dab of super glue on the knot particularly where the tag end comes out provides some extra insurance on slippage. And if you are super paranoid, take out a lighter and wave the tag end through it so that it balls up on the end.

    Frank, How are you!!

Long time no see! For a long time, I have not visited this site..
Because I have been busy and done many complicated works these days..
I found out you had done “EMB” over 30 times! Wow! I think you are very energetic and enthusiastic person for fishing. Now the season is changing to cool weather. This means you can catch the 5 JJA (50cm) BASS at the PyongTaek Lake. I hope you catch the 5 JJA BASS in this year.
If possible I want see you the bank of the lake soon.

I hope always you have good health and enjoy nice fishing…

    Dave,

LOL, you would like that carp spread! You’re right, it could have been a snakehead or something else…I’ve never had a carp pick up a Senko before though but anything is possible.

    Jeremy,

I don’t really want to use a leader because that just introduces one more possible point of failure but I will try different knots - and maybe some superglue too. I like that Suffix 30-pound braid a lot; it casts so smooth and far and I don’t have to worry about birds nests or loops.

    Tasundol,

Nice to hear from you again, hope you’re not too busy to go fishing! I hope I catch that 50cm bass this year too :)

Wow, this place started hopping all of a sudden. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person who came here any more. LOL

I’ve heard of putting super glue on a knot before but have never tried it.

The super glue works well on braid, but don’t do it on mono or copoly, it reacts with those line types and weakens them.

I don’t like leaders either Nomad. I only use them in really rocky areas b/c rocks will chew through braid.

    Thanks for the tip Jeremy…

 September 13th 0730 on the Peongteak river turned out to be really good, especially using hard bait lures. In a few weeks it will be time to start busting the big boys protecting their egg nests with a popper. Spawning season for the bass starts soon. being new here, it did not take long to start bass fishing again. Anyone who wants to go bass fishing in the area, or knows about a small boat for sale, please give me a ring@010-2310-4013

“In a few weeks it will be time to start busting the big boys protecting their egg nests with a popper. Spawning season for the bass starts soon.” :?:
    Larry,
I think you are mistaken about this. The spawn here in Korea is usually in late April/May…possibly even into early June. But if I misunderstood something, my apologies.
See ya on the water. Good luck.

  12. 12 Rob

I think Mike is right Larry, although I’d love for them to spawn again in a few weeks!

What kind of boat are you interested in?
