My upstairs neighbor Mike took me out in his boat today (thanks, Mike!). I got to check out his boat since I’m thinking of buying one, and I also got to enjoy a heck of a good day out on the river. Well, more like a half day, since we were chased off by the torrential downpours (which didn’t bother us too much since the fish were biting) and the lightning and thunder.
Mike fished mainly deep-diving crank baits along with some drop shots, and I tried a little of everything; spinner baits, chatter baits, wacky-rigged Senkos, 4 and 5-inch Senkos (with not much luck, I might add), and once I saw how Mike was tearing them up again, I also tried crank baits. We ended up catching 18 bass, and I’m sure we would have caught a lot more had the weather not turned ugly. Here are some of the pics from today:
I had a blast and learned a few things as well. Thanks a lot, Mike, for taking me out there. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better next time ![]()
Great job guys! Nice pics, and nice fish!
Nomad turning to crankbaits.
What is the world coming to?
Rob,
Thanks
Dave,
Mike was killing me out there…the Senkos just weren’t doing the trick so I had to go with what was working. I know, Gary Yamamoto won’t be sending me a Christmas card this year
Nomad, you were crossed off of Gary’s Christmas card list the minute you submitted that order for those knock-off senkos!
The Senkos produced, but I believe the difference was that we were just able to cover a lot more water with the crankbaits over a shorter period of time.
We had the lure retriever with us today and it saved a few pieces of tackle, but not 100%. It works much better from the boat than from the car.
LOL Rob.
Mike,
You’re probably right but then, the way we were fishing coupled with where the fish were today was also better for a moving bait like a crank bait…plus, that green crap in the water didn’t help matter either, it was really thick closer to shore.
Great job guys
I see the bass didn’t care too much about what color cranks you used.
Now I’m jealous……it’s Sunday morning and I’m working and not fishing

Steve,
It was truly an excellent day…I don’t know if we were hitting the right spots with the right lures or what (there were lots of other boats out but I’m not sure how they did - the few people we did ask said they weren’t doing any good but that could very well have been a ploy to keep us moving along
). The spots we fished are ones that I would ordinarily pass on by though…I don’t think we moved more than a quarter of a mile (if that) from our starting point…just a slow, nice drift downstream, along the shore, looking for bass. Yep, I learned a few things yesterday, which is always a good thing
Don’t worry buddy, you’ll be back out there before you know it!
Nomad,
If I’m lucky enough to not have to come back to Nigeria again, I will do my best to come up and fish that river with guys. It seems to hold some very good fish.
OK, I’d better get back to work
Would be great to have you come up Steve! Hang in there!
Steve,
Looking forward to you coming up this way, we can kick ass and take names
