I’m Really Starting To Like Mondays

29Sep08_0002  To start things out, I caught my first-ever bass on a shaky head rig this morning - to be fair, I hadn’t fished shaky head rigs all that much in the past but on the occasions I tried them, I had no luck at all.  But this morning, I thought that since I’ve been on a mission to, ahem, expand my angling horizons beyond the Senko, I’d tie on one of these to see what would happen.

I also tried a chartreuse spinner bait (I’m all out of the white/red) for about 30 minutes without any luck but for whatever reason, the fish were liking my Senkos today.

I caught the above on my second cast and although I usually bag and tag them as fast as possible so they can get back in the water, I had to weigh this one - 2 pounds, 11 ounces (I thought it was at least 3 pounds…not even close).

That fish in the last pic would not stop flopping around…I was trying to get a shot with him hanging there with the Senko and hook showing and out of 5 attempts at a picture, that was the best one.  LOL.  Once again, a good start to the week smile_regular

Way to go Nomad. Looks like you had a pretty good morning.

I wish my Monday’s started out as well as yours always seem to.

And what a coincidence. I caught my first shaky head fish yesterday! When I first tied it on I had no confidence in it whatsoever, but quickly learned that if a fish wants it, he’s going to eat it no matter what. I had two small fish in the one pound range slam that rig yesterday, which was pretty surprising to say the least. That’s in contrast to the first time I tried to fish it out at Gosam. Out there all they did was nibble at the tail, pick it up and move it a little bit, but those river fish slammed it yesterday.

    Mike,

Thanks, it was a nice way to start the week, that’s for sure.

    Rob,

LOL, you went out there again yesterday? I thought you were going to be swamped all weekend…
Unfortunately, I got that shaky head rig snagged shortly after and didn’t bother tying another one on, too many rocks in that area. I let that one sit for about 3 minutes before I started moving it and as soon as I did move it, that fish hammered it like he had been sitting there, watching it like a cat.

    Nomad,

Don’t feel bad about snagging your shaky rig.
    Just ask Rob about snags…

  5. 5 Rob

Gee, thanks for busting me out Al! :)

Yep Nomad, Alan has dubbed my new nickname as “snagles.” I think I broke my previous record of 1,489 snags in a single day yesterday.

    LOL

Don’t worry, Rob. I’m playing some serious catch-up the way I’ve been going lately. I’m ashamed to admit how many spinner baits, chatter baits and other lures I’ve lost just in the last three weeks. Expanding one’s horizons sure gets expensive fast when fishing from shore

Dude, yesterday was ugly. I only had one snag where I actually had to break the line, but every time I turned around I was hung up on something…weeds, rocks, trees, you name it, I was snagged on it yesterday. Ugly, ugly, ugly….lol

  8. 8 Nomad

Well, if they ever drop the water level low enough, and I beat the Koreans out there, I won’t have to buy any lures for a long time.

  9. 9 Rob

Good luck with that Nomad. :)

You had a better Monday than I am having right now   I am exactly half way through this 28 day hitch, and definatly can’t wait to get home and get into those fall bass.

Great job Nomad…..BTW, 2lb 11oz is only 5oz less than 3lb, so if it ate a crawfish before you caught it, it would of been a 3lber

What bait were you using on the shakey head??

  11. 11 Nomad

    Rob,

I’m not putting off any furure orders with Bass Pro, that’s for sure :)
Steve, I was using either a Zoom Finesse worm or a Berkley shaky head worm, can’t remember…all I know is that it was black.

  12. 12 James

Excellent work Nomad. You’re on your way to kicking that Senko addiction!

  13. 13 Nomad

LOL James. I actually need to thank you because it was your comment a few weeks back that got me started down this road, with rather pleasant results, I might add. So a thanks is in order BUT, I won’t be throwing away any of my Senkos in the near or distant future ;)

  14. 14 Steve

Dang Nomad, I was just going to ask if you wanted to sell all your senkos cheap!!!!

  15. 15 Rob

    lol Steve! :)

  16. 16 Nomad

    Steve,

I’d be lost without my trusty Senkos and I’ll be using them as long as the bass want them :)

  17. 17 Steve

    Senko question for everyone here….

….did anyone buy/try those senko copies yet from Alluringbaits.com??

  18. 18 Nomad

I’ll have to ask John but I *think* we have some on order. I tried to order some but Pay Pal woudn’t take my zip code/phone number combo when I tried to use my Visa card. John said he has a Pay Pal account and would order for both of us so we’ll see how it goes.

    Steve,
I have some of the Alluringbaits. I ordered them back in Feb and I like them fine. They have a good texture, nice sink rate and hold up well too. Definitely worth the difference in price in my opinion. We’ve been having good luck with the AlluringBait Duper Fluke Jr. fished on a dropshot rig lately too. The larger 5″ Jerk Shad worked well fished as a weightless soft jerkbait back in the spring also.

    Mike,
I like the Duper flukes also….they work great on the double fluke rig  but I’ll have to give them a try on the dropshot also. I bet they would work good on a carolina-rig also

Almost all of the plastics I use these days are from Alluringbaits, great baits and value.
